Weekly Activity Report: June 18-24 2010

Weekly Activity Report: June 18/10 to June 24/10

Patrol Officers in the Rideau/Goulbourn area responded to 67 general calls for service from the public for the reporting period of June 18 to June 24.  From the 67 service calls the following is a partial breakdown of incidents by Community:

   Manotick: 2 Accident, 1 Theft-fr.-Veh.

  •   Richmond: 1 B&E, 4 Theft-fr.-Veh.
  •   Half Moon Bay: 1 Theft
  •   Munster: 1 Accident
  •   Steeple Hill: 1 theft

In addition to the calls for service, patrol officers are also proactively enforcing the Highway Traffic laws, responding to false 9-1-1 and alarm calls, and assisting the Ottawa Fire, Paramedics and By-law services.

THE SOLICITORS ARE BACK. So lookout and remember—caveat emptor—Buyer Beware.
Over the past week, solicitors representing Direct Energy, Natural Energy, People in Need, and Poor People of Ontario were reportedly plying the streets of Manotick, Richmond and Stonebridge at various times of the day and night.
For companies like Natural Energy, solicitors will attempt to check out your hot water heater and then pressure you into signing a long term agreement on a new hot water tank. Some of their pressure sales tactics include telling you that Direct Energy is no longer in the water heater rental business, water heaters older than 5 years old are no longer efficient and need to be replace, and water heater sold by Direct Energy aren’t safe.

On the other side of the coin, charities such as People in Need and Poor People of Ontario aren’t registered with the Canadian Revenue Agency and therefore should be treated with a cautious dose of Caveat Emptor.

DOES THIS SOUND SUSPICIOUS? If you saw a person walking around Manotick at 5 in the morning with a gas can and a flashlight would you think it was suspicious and would you call 911?
One complainant thought it was rather suspicious and called 911 to report the incident.
In this case, everything turned out fine; police located the male and discovered that he actually ran out of gas and was looking for a gas station.

A BAD MIX OF SHINGLES AND CONCRETE. A concrete worker called 911 after a roofer flew off the handle and started yelling and shoving him into his truck.
Apparently, the roofer was setoff into a heated rage after the concrete worker asked him not to throw shingles onto his freshly laid concrete.
Police officers responded to the call and patched things up.
ROLL AWAY ACCIDENT. Police were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on O’Grady Street, at around noon on Thurs., June 24, after a parked vehicle rolled down the hill and rear ended another parked car.
The investigating officer discovered that the roll away accident was caused by the combination of the parking brake letting go and the standard transmission being left in neutral.
When parking a standard transmission vehicle on a grade, it is always a good practice to shift the transmission in first gear, engage the parking brake and turn your steering wheel into the curb.

YOUNG DRIVER. A passer-by called 911 after she witnessed a 13-yr-old boy driving a tractor down Hazeldean Road, shortly after 10 a.m. on Sat., June 19.
Police searched the area, but were unable to locate the young tractor driver.
