Weekly Activity Update: Mar. 4/11 to Mar. 10/11

Patrol Officers in the Rideau/Goulbourn area responded to 53 general calls for service from the public for the reporting period of Mar. 4th to Mar. 10th. From these calls for service the following is a partial breakdown of incidents by Community:

  • Ø  Manotick: 1 Suspicious, 1 Theft-fr-Veh.
  • Ø  Kars: 1 Suspicious
  • Ø  Munster: 1 Fire

In addition to the calls for service, patrol officers are also proactively enforcing the Highway Traffic laws, responding to false 9-1-1 and alarm calls, and assisting the Ottawa Fire, Paramedics and By-law services.

EAU DE MARIJUANA. It is hard not to notice the distinct odour of burnt weed, especially when it is eau de marijuana #9. Even when one attempts to mask the smell with a bottle of cologne and a lit cigarette, the strong pungent odour of the magic dragon always seems to powers through.
On Sat., Mar. 5 at around 8:30 p.m., a patrol officer stopped a vehicle on Perth Street, Richmond, for speeding. On his approach to the vehicle the officer was immediately confronted with a strong odour of burnt marijuana emanating from the driver’s window.
In an attempt to mask the smell of the marijuana, the driver lit up a cigarette in front of the officer and doused some cologne around the inside of his car.
As a result of the traffic stop a small quantity of marijuana was seized and the driver fined.
Five days later, on Mar. 10, at around the same time, another vehicle was also stopped on Perth Street for speeding. Again, when the officer approached the driver’s side window he could smell the pungent odour of marijuana coming from inside of the vehicle.
In addition to seizing a small quantity of drugs, the driver was placed under arrest and charged for breaching his probation order of abstaining from possessing and consuming illegal drugs.

MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. Pursuing a course of action midway between extremes is one thing, but taking a nap in the middle of the road is definitely not a wise thing to do, even if you are wearing a bright orange safety jacket.
Police were called out to Franktown and Dwyer Hill Road at around 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday after a passerby happened upon a slightly intoxicated man sleeping in the middle of the eastbound lane of Franktown Road.
According to the man, he was walking to work from Carleton Place, heading into Manotick, when he decided to take a little nap on the roadway.
When asked why he was walking into work from Carleton Place, the man responded by saying that he had to start his shift a lot earlier this morning and that his car pool wouldn’t get him into work on time.
After paramedics assessed the man and found him in good health, especially after being out in the cold for a long period of time, the patrol officer gave him a lift into Manotick and dropped him off at the Tim Horton’s for a much welcomed cup of hot coffee.

DEER COLLISION COUNTERS. Week ten and the total number of deer collisions reported in the West Carleton and Rideau-Goulbourn wards equaled two; one for each ward.
The score now stands at 28 to 9 in favor of Rideau-Goulbourn.

Fire:

Mar. 6      Munster Road, Munster: A trailer home along Munster Road, near Flewellyn, was declared a total loss after a mattress caught on fire and quickly spread throughout the whole unit.
The Ottawa Fire Department had already contained the fire by the time police arrived on scene at around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday.
The homeowner stated to police that he smelled smoke coming from his bedroom and when he went to investigate he discovered that his mattress was on fire.

Suspicious:

Mar. 10   Old Wellington Street, Kars: Police were called out to the Kars RA Centre at around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday after the occupants of three suspicious vehicles had reportedly tipped over a garbage dumpster.
One of the vehicles was known to the complainant and was reported to police for further investigation.
Security concerns were justifiably raised last week after unidentified culprits wreak havoc on the RA Centre’s canteen washroom and caused over $3000 in damages.

Mar. 10   Hilltop Drive, Manotick: A homeowner called police at around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday after she became aware that an unidentified male had been standing in front of her home for the past fifteen minutes.
Furthering the complainant’s suspicion was the male’s odd behavior of repeatedly removing and donning his jacket, and paced back and forth.
The male is described as Caucasian with reddish hair, 20 years of age, 6-foot tall with a large build. He was wearing black pants and jacket, and was carrying a satchel.

Theft:

Mar. 5     Driscoll Drive, Manotick: Sometime between 9 p.m. on Fri., Mar. 4 and 2 p.m. on Sat., Mar. 5, an unidentified person(s) rummaged through a complainant’s unlocked vehicle and smashed three eggs on the driver’s seat.
Nothing was reported stolen from within the vehicle.
